Lydia Forster was lonely. She would never admit it in her letters home, all of which extolled the virtues of Brighton, the fine and sociable circles suiting her so well. And there were parties, many of them, which she dearly loved.

Marriage, however, was not quite what she imagined (not that she had given it much thought). There had been vague ideas of unlimited allowances, cosseting, and most of all, discarding all notions of authority. Untrue, on all counts. The colonel was not unkind, even occasionally useful. But though they had only been married a few short weeks, the heavy hand of authority was becoming familiar. The colonel expected a certain standard of behaviour. He was indulgent in the matter of hair ribbons, but completely rigid when it came to entertaining officers. The few wives nearby were dull creatures, besides which, Lydia was seldom interested in advancing friendship with other females. All told, she once had far more freedom as a daughter of the Bennets of Longbourn than she experienced now in the heart of Brighton’s more vigorous society.

“Mrs Forster?”

Lydia turned at the unfamiliar voice—and startled. The man before her, resplendent in an officer’s redcoat, was simply the loveliest she had ever seen.

“Who are you? How did you get in my room? La, I cannot believe you got past the drag—”

“Hush.”

Lydia stilled at once, staring into his fathomless eyes.

“You will come with me now.”

She immediately rose, her mouth gaping just a bit, hurrying to his side.

Well, well, Wickham thought. He might not have even needed to compel her to achieve cooperation. Lydia Forster was astonishingly easy.
